Why is the nikkor 80-200mm f2.8D much cheaper than the nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G vr2 ?

It's an older design, from around the turn of the century so the R&D has been paid for. It also does not contain the VR2 mechanism, which means it's a bit cheaper in parts.
