What is a good sewing machine that you can buy that is reliably, easy to use and inexpensive?

I advise you go to a Spotlight store. They will help you decide which machine is best for you and even let you try them out. I know they have Brother and Elna brands at least maybe more. They used to give lessons but not sure if they do now, just ask.
