Guitar Nut Replacement size?

I have a Cheap Dean Vendetta XM and the nut chipped off where it used to hold the low e string. My dad got me a nut for my B-day yesterday but the nut is to short and the spacing between the strings is too wide. can anybody inform me about choosing a right nut size for my guitar? thx
